The 7th edition of the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) “Green Book” on geometric street design introduced the concept of context-based classification of roadways. This concept is intended to ensure that roadway designs are appropriate for the settings in which they are built and operated. Without any specific methodologies or parameters, however, agencies are implementing context classification in their own design guidance. TRB hosted a webinar on Thursday, September 7, 2023 from 2:00 PM to 3:30 PM Eastern that described the experiences and lessons learned by various state transportation agencies that may be valuable to others who are seeking to implement context-based classification.
This webinar featured research from NCHRP Domestic Scan 21-02: Leading Approaches to Implementing Context-Based Classification of Roadways in Planning and Design.
This webinar was sponsored by TRB’s National Highway Cooperative Research Program and the Standing Technical Committee on the Performance Effects of Geometric Design.
The slides are linked in the meeting materials. View the recorded webinar below.
