Transparency in Federal Agency Statistics — New Report
Media Advisory
Last update November 18, 2021
A new report from the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine makes recommendations for how federal agencies can improve the transparency and reproducibility of federal statistics — such as education, labor, health, income, and justice statistics.
The report says that, in general, documentation of the processes agencies use to collect data and prepare raw data for analysis is fairly complete, but agency leadership should make the transparency of statistical processes and methods a high priority. Agencies should develop coding style guides for computational processes, and when possible, make their code publicly available. The report offers several other recommendations regarding metadata, transparency for contractors, and continuing education, among other topics.
Transparency in Statistical Information for the National Center for Science and Engineering Statistics and All Federal Statistical Agencies is available for immediate release.
