The Gulf Scholars Program will be a new partnership that aligns the core competencies of the NAE Grand Challenge Scholars Program with the Gulf Research Program’s mandate of enhancing offshore oil safety, protecting environmental resources, and enhancing the health and resilience of Gulf communities. An ad-hoc committee will be appointed to oversee the design and development of the Gulf Scholars Program, which will begin with a pilot program at three Gulf of Mexico institutions in the 2020 academic year.

Description

An ad-hoc committee of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine will be appointed to oversee the design and development of the Gulf Scholars Program, which is a new partnership between the NASEM Gulf Research Program (GRP) and the NAE Grand Challenge Scholars Program (NAE GCSP).
The ad-hoc committee will design and plan the new Gulf Scholars Program that will be piloted at three Gulf of Mexico institutions in the 2020 academic year.
The committee will:
• Design the core components and structure of the program that aligns with the vision and goals of the GRP, as well as the structure of the NAE GCSP in each of the pilot institutions.
• Determine appropriate use of GRP resources among identified Gulf Scholar Program participants or their home institutions.
• Identify and develop opportunities for collaboration and expansion.
• Suggest experts to serve on a future standing committee to guide the development and adaption of the program past its pilot phase.
