The Roundtable on Mentorship, Well-being, and Professional Development will be holding an open session on the roles, responsibilities, expectations, and benefits that science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) graduate students and postdoctoral scholars serve and receive across the U.S. STEM enterprise. Through this session, the Roundtable is hoping to explore the current landscape and history of graduate student and postdoctoral scholar labor movements, including questions such as:

What are the current expectations of STEM graduate students and postdoctoral scholars and how have these changed?
Why are these critical members of the STEM ecosystem turning to unionization and collective bargaining?
What is the full extent of this current movement?
What might the STEM community learn from the movement towards unionization and collective bargaining?

During this third and final evidence- and information-gathering workshop hosted by the Committee on the Science of Effective Mentoring in STEMM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics, and Medicine), scholars, mentors, and mentees imagined how to realize an evidence-based, online resource guide on mentorship. This daylong event was designed to clarify the purpose and scope of the online resource, identify users and use cases, and define the desirable functionalities of the final product.

The workshop agenda featured framing presentations from two experts in guiding principles for online resources that serve as repositories and foster virtual communities. Participants then discussed possibilities and sketch out their ideas by career stage, discipline, and other crosscutting interests.

The workshop is part of a larger effort organized by the Board on Higher Education and Workforce at the National Academies to heighten the quality, vigor, and innovation in the U.S. STEMM enterprise. Integral to this is increasing the diversity of individuals, research teams, and leadership in STEMM fields. The Committee on the Science of Effective Mentoring in STEMM seeks to enhance the advancement of historically underrepresented populations in STEMM through the systematic compilation and analysis of the current research on mentorship in STEMM. The results will be used to create an evidence-based, online resource to assist STEMM practitioners in mentoring effectively and inclusively.

Identifying effective practices of mentorship in science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and medicine (STEMM) is a science in itself. Psychological and behavioral sciences are important STEMM disciplines. This session will provide an opportunity for mentors and program directors to share their principles and practices with the Committee on the Science of Effective Mentoring in STEMM of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine. The committee is seeking input for their final report as well as an online interactive guide of effective programs and practices that can be adopted and adapted by institutions, departments, and individual faculty members.

Designed to identify successful evidence-based practices and metrics for mentorship in STEMM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Medicine, and Mathematics) career pathways, this contributory workshop will target 40 to 50 thought leaders in practice, research and theory related to effective mentorship in STEMM. The particular focus will be on identifying emergent knowledge, theories, research methods, and practices, across disciplines, domains and developmental stages.

The agenda of the workshop includes a combination of thought-provoking presentations by leading scholars and practitioners like you as well as structured, highly interactive sessions to collate and compile the deeply rich knowledge of participants.
