Working Group 1: On Leading A Lab, Guidance for Lab Leaders

In progress

Any project, supported or not by a committee, that is currently being worked on or is considered active, and will have an end date.

The Strategic Council for Research Excellence, Integrity, and Trust serves as a venue for stakeholders to collectively advance the integrity, ethics, resilience, and effectiveness of the research enterprise, while at the same time preparing it for tomorrow's challenges. The Strategic Council Working Groups address issues relevant to improving the research ecosystem.

Description

This Working Group seeks to address a gap in training in the latest updates to the responsible conduct of research (RCR) for those in scientific leadership positions. RCR training and educational material exists for early career researchers, including the National Academies’ resource On Being a Scientist, but little training exists for those who lead laboratories, large collaborations, or scientific institutions.

An initial outcome of this Working Group was a National Academies workshop, On Leading a Lab. The workshop, held in December 2023, explored the expanding roles, expectations, and needs for leaders of research as they prepare to direct other researchers and scientists in fulfilling ethical responsibilities and creating environments conducive to the responsible conduct of research.

In addition to the workshop, the Working Group will continue to identify and prioritize other activities that will address the gap in training the leaders of science.
