Mentorship, Well-being, and Professional Development in Times of Societal Change and Institutional Disruptions: A Workshop

Recently completed

A committee-supported project or activity that has been completed and for which output dissemination has begun. Its committee has been disbanded and closeout procedures are underway.

Critical supports and resources within the STEMM research ecosystem are shifting in reaction to rapid changes in institutional, regional, and national environments. In addition, decisions made by external groups and individuals can have a dramatic and profound influence on the well-being, professional development, and interpersonal and mentoring relationships of graduate students, postdoctoral scholars, and faculty. Building upon the conversations held during the first two Roundtable workshops, the goal of this third public workshop is to apply a systemic lens to explore the ways in which individuals, departments and offices, and institutions are addressing and navigating these common challenges.

Description

A planning committee of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine will organize a public workshop to explore how individuals within the STEMM research ecosystem (including graduate students, postdoctoral scholars, staff, faculty and administrators) can come together to resolve issues at multiple institutional levels related to mentorship, well-being, and professional development, especially for individuals from marginalized and historically underrepresented populations in STEMM. Workshop participants will explore how academic systems that support the interrelated concepts of mentorship, well-being, and professional development have been affected by recent societal shifts and legal changes impacting higher education (e.g., the COVID-19 pandemic, unionization, and federal and state legislation) and will discuss how these broad, systemic challenges can be addressed through inclusive dialogue with all members of the STEMM research community.
This workshop may include:
1) An overview of components that are critical to maintain and embed in interventions that aim to simultaneously address mentorship, well-being, and professional development.
2) Discussions about how individuals, departments and offices, and institutions can adapt and adopt interventions that more effectively support the well-being and professional development of all members of the STEMM research ecosystem.
3) An exploration of how recent and proposed changes in policies and legislation may have altered overall well-being, professional development opportunities, and engagement of learners and early career STEMM professionals in the STEMM research ecosystem.
Following the workshop, a rapporteur-authored workshop proceedings-in-brief will be published.
