Description

The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine will appoint a standing committee to assist the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System on its efforts to reduce counterfeiting of federal reserve notes (FRNs) in the United States. The standing committee will serve as a focal point for discussion of the science and application of behavioral research related to this issue, particularly research from the sensory sciences and social psychology. The committee will identify and discuss the strengths and limitations of the existing literature, and in consultation with the sponsor, will design a statement of task and commission a laboratory study to address questions unaddressed in the current literature. The commissioned work will be presented to and discussed with the sponsor at a standing committee meeting to inform continued discussions of potential research application and future research needs to combat counterfeiting. The committee discussions will also inform the potential development of workshops or studies on the topic.
