People spend the vast majority of their time inside their homes and other indoor environments where they are exposed to a wide range of chemicals from building materials, furnishings, occupants, cooking, consumer products, and other sources. These chemicals can adversely impact human health, but very little is currently known about how indoor chemicals go from their source to generating health impacts.

Please join the National Academies for a webinar on December 10 from 1:00 PM to 2:45 PM ET to take a retrospective look at the report Why Indoor Chemistry Matters, future possibilities and potential pathways for indoor chemistry research, and why it matters to human health. Paula Olsiewski (Johns Hopkins University) will moderate a discussion with Delphine Farmer (Colorado State University), Marina Vance (University of Colorado Boulder, Boulder), and Charles Weschler (Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey). The panel will be followed by a Q&A session.

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs)—produced by cooking, household cleaners, some building materials, and smoke—build up on indoor surfaces over time and affect indoor air quality. People are exposed to these contaminants through inhalation, skin contact, and dust ingestion, which can lead to short-term and long-term health effects.

Please join the National Academies for a webinar on October 30 from 1-2:30pm ET to discuss a recent experiment (featured in a newly published PNAS article) that explores to what extent VOCs are absorbed by typical surfaces within a home, from walls to furniture, to better understand how families can limit VOC exposure.

During the webinar, Glenn Morrison (University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill) will moderate a discussion with paper authors Jonathan Abbatt (University of Toronto), Manabu Shiraiwa (University of California, Irvine), and Delphine Farmer (Colorado State University) to discuss the implications of their research, including how wildfires contribute to indoor contamination.

The high cost of eggs has been one of the most visible societal impacts of H5N1 bird flu. First detected on U.S. poultry farms in February 2022 and in U.S. dairy cattle in 2024, the deadly bird flu strain has now spread to all fifty states. What are the risks to humans and susceptible animals, like cats? How are farmers coping with the disease, and what role do state and local officials play? How do costs along the supply chain translate to costs at the grocery store? Join this webinar to learn from experts about what’s next in managing the spread and impacts of the disease.

Susan VandeWoude is the Dean for the College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences, and an University Distinguished Professor of Comparative Medicine. Her research focuses on the biology, pathogenesis, trans-species infectivity, and co-evolution of HIV-like retroviruses of endangered non-domestic felid species. Dr. VandeWoud's laboratory also studies the ecology of infectious diseases in North American felid species, specifically the impact of urbanization on the spread of disease between domestic cats, bobcats, and pumas.

Dr. Kyle Shipman currently serves as the Indiana State Veterinarian and is the Chief Administrative Officer for the Indiana State Board of Animal Health, Indiana Board of Veterinary Medicine, and the Indiana Center for Animal Policy. He is a graduate of Purdue University’s College of Veterinary Medicine and College of Agriculture (Animal Sciences). Dr. Shipman is a Foreign Animal Disease Diagnostician and holds a graduate certificate from Purdue University in Veterinary Homeland Security.

Dr. Jada Thompson is an associate professor in the Department of Agricultural Economics and Agribusiness at the University of Arkansas and is affiliated with the Center of Excellence for Poultry Science. Her research primarily focuses on animal health and livestock economics with emphasis on poultry. Dr. Thompson received a Ph.D. from Colorado State University in 2016, a MS in agricultural economics from the University of Arkansas and a MS in rural development from a European Consortium in 2010, and a BS in poultry science and agricultural business in 2008.

It’s been a little over a year since H5N1 avian influenza or “bird flu” was first detected in U.S. dairy cows, and many questions remain about the highly pathogenic virus.

In response, the National Academies' Health and Medicine Division and Division on Earth and Life Studies are holding a special edition “Healthy Exchange” webinar series addressing the topic. The first webinar in the series, “What Everyone Should Know About Bird Flu (H5N1),” will take place on April 29, 2025. Subject matter experts will provide general information about the virus and explain how we got here, who's at risk, and what's at stake.

The first webinar will also address the spread the bird flu to other animals and humans, pathways of transmission, its impact on common products such as milk and eggs, and much more. An audience Q&A will follow an informal discussion with the following panelists:

Nahid Bhadelia, MD, MALD, is the Founding Director of the Center on Emerging Infections Diseases; Associate Professor of Infectious Diseases at the Boston University School of Medicine; and Global Health Security at the Boston University Frederick S. Pardee School of Global Studies. She served as Senior Policy Advisor for Global COVID-19 Response for the White House COVID-19 Response Team in 2022-2023, where she coordinated the interagency programs for global COVID-19 vaccine donations from the U.S. and was the policy lead for Project NextGen, a $5B HHS program aimed at developing next generation vaccines and treatments for pandemic prone coronaviruses. Dr. Bhadelia also served as the interim Testing Coordinator for the White House MPOX Response Team. She is the Director and co-founder of Biothreats Emergence, Analysis and Communications Network (BEACON), an open-source outbreak surveillance program.

Gino Lorenzoni, DVM, MS, PhD, is Associate Professor of Poultry Science and Avian Health at The Pennsylvania State University. With extensive experience in the allied poultry industry, he has served as a technical advisor for broiler and layer farmers, providing assistance to poultry operations across Europe and the Americas. At Penn State, Dr. Lorenzoni leads a comprehensive program that integrates teaching, research, and outreach. He teaches courses on poultry diseases and comparative animal physiology while directing a research program focused on critical poultry health challenges, including necrotic enteritis, coccidiosis, and bacterial chondronecrosis with osteomyelitis (BCO). Additionally, he leads an outreach initiative dedicated to training poultry producers—both small-scale and commercial—on effective biosecurity measures.

Treana Mayer, DVM, is a Postdoctoral Fellow in Microbiology at the Colorado State University where she completed a 2-year Clinical Microbiology Residency and a research fellowship in translational science. While serving as interim Section Head of Molecular Diagnostics at CSU's Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory, she helped oversee Avian Influenza emergency outbreak PCR testing from birds across the US. Dr. Mayer is currently a PhD candidate in the department of Microbiology, Immunology & Pathology, in collaboration with the USDA National Wildlife Research Center, researching emerging H5N1 transmission dynamics.

People spend most of their time indoors, living and working. This final workshop will explore how excessive heat affects indoor environments, particularly for workers and it will examine the effects of excessive heat, its impact on environmental chemistry, and the consequences for human health.

Key topics will include how the health of indoor workers are impacted by the interactions of outdoor heat and how research can advance our understanding of: outdoor/indoor chemistry interactions, indoor air quality, epidemiology and toxicology research on exposure to contaminants, and how various building types, machines, equipment, and products can influence hazardous indoor chemistry and heat exposures.

The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine's Environmental Health Matters Initiative organized a webinar series to explore human exposure to and related health effects of microplastics in the environment.

The third webinar in the series aimed to inform the public and the scientific research community about the potential hazards associated with microplastics, drawing on documented studies and scientific evidence. It explored the harmful characteristics that researchers and stakeholders may consider in future studies.

Additionally, speakers discussed established methodologies for risk assessment while examining the complexities, uncertainties, and challenges involved in evaluating risks. This webinar aimed to lay a foundation for the development of a comprehensive and standardized framework for assessing microplastic-related risks, which can inform research priorities and downstream decision-making.
The webinar featured presentations from Todd Gouin (TG Environmental Research), Philip Landrigan (Boston College), and Stephanie Wright (Imperial College London), followed by a multisectoral panel discussion between the speakers and Valerie Hanley (California Department of Toxic Substances Control).

The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine's Environmental Health Matters Initiative organized a webinar series to explore human exposure to and related health effects of microplastics in the environment.

The second webinar of the Microplastics & Health webinar series aimed to promote awareness and provide a standard baseline understanding of microplastics' distribution in the environment and the most prevalent sources or hotspots of human exposure. Specifically, speakers and panelists highlighted the major exposure pathways (e.g., inhalation, ingestion, dermal contact) and identified which pathways pose the highest risk to human health. The goal was to bridge scientific findings with policy and regulatory frameworks by identifying data gaps, research priorities, and regulatory strategies that can mitigate microplastic exposure and inform downstream decision-making.

The webinar featured presentations from Bart Koelmans (Wageningen University) and Tracey Woodruff (University of California, San Francisco) followed by a multisectoral panel discussion between the speakers and Matthew MacLeod (Stockholm University) and Jane Muncke (Food Packaging Forum).
