Measurement and Analysis of Public Opinion: A Workshop to Discuss an Analytic Framework

Completed

The National Academies of Science, Engineering, and Medicine developed an analytic framework designed to help Intelligence Community (IC) analysts apply insights from the social and behavioral sci-ences on state-of-the-art approaches to measure public attitudes in non-Western populations. The project concludes with this workshop to discuss the framework and its potential applications. Cutting edge methods for using large-scale data will be explored during the workshop, as well as cultural and ethical considerations in the collection and use of public opinion data.

Description

A planning committee of the National Academies of Science, Engineering and Medicine will plan and execute a 2-day, public workshop to discuss the highlights and practical aspects from a project on the development of an analytic framework designed to help Intelligence Community (IC) analysts apply insights from the social and behavioral sciences to better inform policymakers. The workshop will address current methods for using public opinion data to inform international affairs, how analysts can best use that knowledge, and how analysts can best combine and communicate their insights to the policy community. The workshop will bring together IC analysts, experts overseeing the framework, and commissioned paper authors to discuss the development and use of the framework and possible lessons for future framework projects.
