The Board on Higher Education and Workforce, in collaboration with the Health and Medicine Division, will plan and conduct a 1-day scoping meeting for a possible study on the impact and future role of intercollegiate athletics at US universities. Participants will discuss a variety of core issues in intercollegiate athletics. Individual participants will comment on priority issues relating to this topic and provide guidance on themes for examination in a possible follow-up consensus study.
Description
The Board on Higher Education and Workforce, in collaboration with the Health and Medicine Division, will plan and conduct a 1-day scoping meeting for a possible study on the impact and future role of intercollegiate athletics at US universities. Participants will discuss a variety of core issues in intercollegiate athletics, which may include:
- The impact of high profile athletic programs on the educational integrity of the university and the potential long-term effects on on all students;
- Concerns regarding student-athlete safety and health, particularly head injuries sustained from participation in intercollegiate athletics and prescription opioid abuse related to sports injuries;
- Educational experiences of student athletes, both beneficial and adverse;
- Considerations about student-athlete amateurism status and compensation; and
- Commercialization of university athletic programs and athletes.
Individual participants will comment on priority issues relating to this topic and provide guidance on themes for examination in a possible follow-up consensus study.
