3.0 Recommendations for Future Research Needs

The following research is recommended for future HFG development:

  • The HFG would benefit greatly from the conduct of an implementation/pilot project to apply the HFG4 to activities like roadway design, road safety audits, and countermeasure selection and evaluation. In such an effort, 3-5 state DOTs could be recruited to take part in the project. The project should include an evaluation component to gain lessons learned for future HFG efforts.
  • Several of the original HFG2 chapters are in great need of being updated and are associated with considerable research that can be used as the basis for these updates. These include the chapters on Interchanges, Work Zones, Rural Environments, Signing, Markings, Lighting.
