Social Science Modeling for Big Data in the World of Machine Learning: A Workshop

Completed

The workshop will discuss how social science research on aging could best leverage big data and machine-learning techniques to enhance social research in aging. Discussions at the workshop will include topics such as methodological issues with big data, statistical and operational challenges with use of big data and machine learning, the use of big data and machine learning to make casual inferences, techniques for addressing privacy concerns in using big data, and combining different sources of data to improve understanding of social processes and outcomes for the elderly.

Description

A planning committee will plan, organize, and conduct a two-day workshop to discuss how social science research could best leverage big data and machine-learning techniques to enhance social research in aging. Potential topics for discussion include: the operational and statistical challenges associated with the use of big data and machine learning methods; potential uses of machine learning in relation to population sub-groups; and how big data can improve and/or complement existing data collection methods such as surveys.
