- EXAMINE the role of anti-Black racism in the disproportionate impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on Black Communities.
This is an initiative of the Roundtable on Black Men and Black Women in Science, Engineering, and Medicine.
Description
A planning committee of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine will organize a virtual public workshop to explore facets of anti-Black racism in U.S. science, engineering, and medicine (SEM). The workshop will review the discussions at recent workshops of the Roundtable on Black Men and Black Women, identify policies and practices that perpetuate racism in SEM, and lay a foundation of knowledge for others to move more effectively towards anti-racist outcomes. Major objectives of the workshop include:
- Provide an overview of impacts of racism and bias on Black people in SEM
- Explore how systemic, anti-Black racism affects the educational pathways and mentoring and advising relationships of Black students in SEM
- Highlight how anti-Black racism contributes to the financial barriers and psychological factors that impact Black Students in SEM
- Examine the role of anti-Black racism in the disproportionate impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on Black Communities
A rapporteur-authored workshop proceedings will be published.
