As science plays an ever increasing role in policy decisions, the Committee on Preparing the Next Generation of Policy Makers for Science-Based Decisions, an ad hoc committee under the auspices of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine's Committee on Science, Technology, and Law (CSTL), has overseen the development of educational modules that elucidate the role of science in decision-making for professional school students, with a particular emphasis on scientific and statistical methods of inference.

Description

An ad hoc committee will oversee the development of educational materials to provide professional school students with a deeper understanding of key scientific principles and concepts that they are likely to use in future decision-making. Materials will be designed as individual modules for use by faculty seeking to improve scientific understanding among medical, legal, public policy, and business students, either as parts of courses or as a course itself which individual faculty members will design. The modules will be structured to explicate core competencies in science and technology through illustrative case studies. The committee will solicit proposals for the modules, award contracts, and approve the final modules. The modules will be posted on the project website along with an introduction by the committee describing the purpose of the project and the intended use of the modules. Finally, the committee will organize a meeting to disseminate information about the project and modules to relevant faculty/stakeholders. Although initially posted on the National Academies website, an appropriate longer-term platform for the educational materials is envisioned - one which can serve as the nexus of a new community of scholars, students and, professionals dedicated to improving the uses of science in medicine, law, public policy and business decision-making and wherein additional educational materials can be discussed, developed, and housed.
