Glossary

Advisory committee: a specialized group convened to provide guidance, expertise, and recommendations on matters related to the integration of arts and cultural initiatives within an airport environment. The committee may also contribute to the development of policies, procedures, and strategies for implementing an airport arts program.

Airport arts master plan: a comprehensive strategic document that outlines the initiatives, objectives, and guidelines for integrating arts and cultural initiatives into an airport’s physical infrastructure, facilities, and operations.

Airport arts program: an initiative implemented by airports to incorporate various forms of art into their facilities with the aim of enhancing the travel experience by providing passengers with opportunities to engage with art installations, exhibitions, performances, and cultural events while they wait for their flights or navigate through the airport.

Airport arts strategic plan: a specialized document that outlines the goals, objectives, and strategies for integrating arts and cultural initiatives into an airport’s overall vision and mission.

Airport master plan: a comprehensive strategic document that outlines the long-term development goals, objectives, and guidelines for an airport’s physical infrastructure, facilities, and operations.

Airport strategic plan: a focused and forward-looking document that outlines the overarching goals, objectives, and priorities of an airport to achieve its long-term vision and mission.

Art acquisition: the process of acquiring artworks, artifacts, or cultural objects for a collection, whether by purchase, donation, or commission.

Art exhibition: a curated presentation of artworks, usually held in a specific venue such as an airport, gallery, or cultural institution.

Art installations: artworks created specifically for a particular space, environment, or context, often using a combination of materials, techniques, and concepts to transform the viewer’s perception and experience.

Arts programming: the planning, development, and implementation of artistic activities, events, and initiatives within a specific context or setting, including organizing exhibitions, performances, workshops, artist residencies, public art projects, and educational programs aimed at engaging audiences and promoting cultural enrichment.

Changing exhibitions: a curated display of artworks, artifacts, or thematic installations that are showcased for a limited period of time in a specific venue, such as an airport, gallery, or cultural institution (also referred to as “temporary exhibitions”).

Conservation: the practice of preserving and protecting artworks, artifacts, and cultural heritage objects from deterioration, damage, or decay.

Deaccession: the process by which an airport or cultural institution removes an artwork or object from its permanent collection.

Maintenance: (specifically art maintenance) the ongoing care and preservation of artworks to ensure their longevity and integrity. This process includes routine inspections, cleaning, and preventive measures to mitigate environmental risks, such as fluctuations in temperature, humidity, and light exposure, which can cause deterioration or damage.

Performance exhibitions: curated presentations that combine elements of live performance with traditional exhibition practices, often blurring the boundaries between visual art, theater, and interactive experiences.

Permanent exhibitions: a curated display of artworks, artifacts, or thematic installations that are intended to remain on view for an extended period, typically for years or even decades, in a specific venue such as an airport, gallery, or cultural institution.

Public art master plan: a strategic document that outlines a municipality’s or organization’s long-term vision, goals, and strategies for integrating public art into the community.

Selection committee: a group responsible for evaluating and selecting artworks, artists, or proposals for inclusion in an airport’s arts program and making recommendations based on criteria such as artistic merit, relevance to the airport environment, and alignment with program goals.

Spatial trapping: the strategic placement of artworks within the terminal space to create an immersive and visually engaging environment that captivates travelers, provides waymaking, and enhances their experience.

Temporary exhibitions: a curated display of artworks, artifacts, or thematic installations that are showcased for a limited time in a specific venue, such as an airport, gallery, or cultural institution (also referred to as a “changing exhibition”).

Volunteer committee: a group of individuals who offer their time, skills, and expertise on a voluntary basis to support and promote arts and cultural initiatives within an airport environment.

Waymaking: the integration of art installations and design elements into the overall navigational infrastructure of the airport to assist travelers in wayfinding, orientation, and navigation throughout the terminal.
