The Fall meeting of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine’s Roundtable on Science and Technology for Sustainability was held on December 13-14, 2022 in Washington, DC.
On December 14, Roundtable members heard from the National Academies leadership and our stakeholders about their current plans, activities, and priorities in the areas of science and technology for sustainability and related areas. This meeting focused on discussions of Roundtable priorities in the context of collaboration with other National Academies activities. Roundtable members also discussed suggestions for potential ideas for sustainability science and technology activities in 2023.

Operationalizing Sustainable Development: Public Release Webinar

The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine hosted a public release webinar of a new short consensus report on November 29 at 12:00-1:00 pm ET. The report, Operationalizing Sustainable Development to Benefit People and the Planet, identifies key research priorities and possible actionable steps to operationalize sustainable development. The committee convened two virtual public workshops in April and May 2022 to gather information on positive case studies across eight interrelated themes, which served as the primary source of evidence for its work. The committee hopes that positive case studies and information provided in this report will guide federal and local policy makers, researchers, practitioners, civil society, educators, business and philanthropic leaders, and other stakeholders in their efforts toward sustainable development.

This information gathering session will ask the national laboratories, the Department of Energy, and non-governmental organizations doing major work related to the built environment to lay out what they see as (1) priority actions (so-called “low hanging fruit”) that could be providing carbon benefits starting today, and (2) technologies that need RD&D, and what that RD&D would entail and cost, to provide carbon benefits in the future.

Sessions will be held October 20th from 1:30 PM to 3:15 PM ET, and October 21st from 2:00 PM to 3:15 PM ET.

Compensation through public revenue and private payments has long played an influential role in public attitudes towards and experiences of large-scale energy infrastructure. Compensation policy failures can amplify or focus public resistance to energy transitions and/or new projects, and are implicated in injustices that affect host communities.

The National Academies' Committee on Accelerating Decarbonization in the United States: Technology, Policy, and Societal Dimensions invites you to join them for a webinar on October 3 at 12:00-3:00 PM ET that explores state-of-the-art knowledge and practices in the design and implementation of compensation programs, with the goal of advancing recommendations that help solve for equity, restorative justice, and social acceptance outcomes associated with the build out of new large-scale infrastructure essential for rapid decarbonization of the energy system. The committee aims to collect perspectives that include private as well as public compensation, and generation as well as transmission facilities. Experts will review strengths and weaknesses, and innovations in policy and practices which address how local financial benefits are determined and awarded across different technologies and jurisdictions. A key priority for the webinar is to identify those policies which do the best job of addressing power differentials among affected publics and between affected publics and project proponents. This webinar will serve to build upon the findings and recommendations of the committee’s 2021 report, Accelerating Decarbonization of the U.S. Energy System, and guide them in writing a second.

As the United States embarks on a path towards net-zero carbon emissions, understanding how publics can more effectively participate in the buildout of major electricity delivery infrastructure will be critical.

The National Academies' Committee on Accelerating Decarbonization in the United States: Technology, Policy, and Societal Dimensions invites you to join them for a webinar on September 30 at 1:00-4:00 PM ET focused on exploring objectives, challenges, best practices, and innovations in engaging the public in the planning, siting, and permitting processes unique to high voltage transmission lines development. A robust transmission grid is broadly viewed as an enabler of achieving decarbonization by 2050. Panel discussions will address current issues in public engagement from three perspectives: in the electric transmission planning process; in project siting and permitting; and as a matter of intergovernmental coordination. This webinar will serve to build upon the findings and recommendations of the committee’s 2021 report, Accelerating Decarbonization of the U.S. Energy System, and guide them in writing a second.

As the United States embarks on a path towards net-zero carbon emissions, understanding how to decarbonize the manufacturing sector will be critical. The 2021 National Academies' report Accelerating Decarbonization of the U.S. Energy System outlines critical near-term policies needed for the decarbonization effort. Among many other things, this report recommends that Congress provide manufacturing incentives to firms through various policy tools and create a new Assistant Secretary for Carbon Smart Manufacturing and Industry within DOE.

As part of information gathering for the study's second report, the National Academies' Committee on Accelerating Decarbonization in the United States: Technology, Policy, and Societal Dimensions will host a webinar on September 9 at 2:00-3:30pm ET with representatives from DOE's Advanced Manufacturing Office and several USA Manufacturing Institutes to explore their roles in accelerating energy and GHG emissions reductions in the industrial sector. The panel discussion aims to provide information to the committee on opportunities, paths, and near-term actions for industrial decarbonization.

Low Fixed-Cost Green Energy for All: from Sweden to the U.S.

As part of Climate Week NYC, Franklin Carrero-Martínez, Senior Director of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine’s Science and Technology for Sustainability (STS) Program, participated in a panel discussion on September 22, 2025*. The session focused on the recent publication, EnergyNet Explained: A How-To Guide for the 21st Century Energy System* with co-authors from Sweden and the United States. Panelists described recent developments and future large-scale implementation of the EnergyNet in Sweden and throughout the European Union, and discussed efforts to bring the EnergyNet to the United States, particularly on college and university campuses, and in states, cities, and communities.
