The National Academies Roundtable on Science and Technology for Sustainability, in collaboration with the Board on Health Care Services and Board on Science Education, convened a hybrid workshop, Artificial Intelligence in Education and Mental Health for a Sustainable Future on May 30, 2024.

The workshop consisted of two parts: AI in mental health and well-being and AI in education. Participants reviewed AI tools, applications, and strategies in education and mental health and the implications for sustainable development. Discussions included knowledge gaps between academia and the private sector, as well as opportunities and key priorities for promoting sustainability, including startup and local perspectives.

The workshop also discussed opportunities for cross-sector collaboration, including AI potential to accelerate progress on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This Proceedings of a Workshop—in Brief summarizes the presentations and discussion of the event.

A meeting of the Roundtable on Science and Technology for Sustainability was held on May 30-31, 2024. On May 30, the Roundtable, in collaboration with the Board on Health Care Services and Board on Science Education, convened a one-day public workshop, Artificial Intelligence in Education and Mental Health for a Sustainable Future. Participants reviewed AI tools, applications, and strategies in education and mental health and the implications for sustainable development. A Proceedings of a Workshop—in Brief will be prepared by a designated rapporteur and distributed broadly.
On May 31, the Roundtable held a session to discuss current activities, priorities relating to sustainability, and suggestions for potential ideas for sustainability science and technology activities for Fall 2024.

On May 20, 2024, the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine's Science and Technology for Sustainability Program and the Embassy of Sweden in Washington co-organized an event, Beyond the Hype: Putting AI to Work for Sustainable Development. Artificial Intelligence (AI) has been portrayed as a universal solution for global challenges, especially climate change and healthcare-related challenges; however, this portrayal raises a critical question: is AI just hype?

Participants including diplomats, scientists, and tech experts discussed AI's practical applications and limitations, including:

AI's Impact on the Sustainable Development Goals: The discussion focused on how AI can potentially advance the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) across various sectors. Recent research has identified best practices and made strides towards SDGs, and these discussions addressed socio-economic and environmental concerns such as energy consumption, e-waste generation, and manufacturing footprint.
Impact of AI Hallucinations: AI hallucinations, generated by biased or inadequate training data, pose significant risks related to misinformation and ethics. Participants explored the impact of these hallucinations in critical areas such as health, energy, climate, water, and biodiversity, and how research can ensure responsible AI development and deployment.
International Collaboration in AI Research: Collaboration across national boundaries in AI research is crucial for maximizing AI's benefits for global sustainability. Participants highlighted the importance of cooperation among AI researchers and developers, emphasizing how such collaboration can leverage collective advantages and comparative strengths for mutual benefit.

One question was repeatedly asked: "Where can we go with this technology together?"

Since AI’s potential to revolutionize research and unlock new levels of discovery is not infallible, participants discussed that it is crucial to ensure researchers refrain from ceding their critical thinking skills and maintain their agency. While AI can simplify tasks through automation, it can also complicate matters by introducing bias in data analysis. As AI becomes more and more commonplace, participants discussed that it is essential for a diverse group of leaders to shape the future landscape of AI-transformed systems.

A virtual meeting of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine’s Roundtable on Science and Technology for Sustainability was held on December 19, 2023. This meeting focused on discussions of Roundtable priorities and suggestions for potential ideas for sustainability science and technology activities in 2024.
The meeting also included a session on challenges and opportunities relating to climate migration and sustainable development. Speakers from international organization, academia, and nongovernmental organization discussed impacts of climate migration on displaced science, engineering, and medical professionals, as well as perspectives from small island developing states. Discussions were related to the Sustainable Development Goals, including Goals 3 (good health and well-being), 4 (quality education), and 13 (climate action).

Recent legislation has put the nation on the path towards achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050, but many challenges remain.

An upcoming National Academies’ report, Accelerating Decarbonization in the United States, identifies key actions necessary to support the nation’s decarbonization efforts, including policy, technology, and societal dimensions. The report provides sector-by-sector recommendations to help policymakers successfully implement an equitable energy transition over the next decade and beyond.

The pervasive effects of supply chain disruptions, underscored by the COVID-19 pandemic, climate change, and critical shortages of essential commodities such as infant formula, prescription drugs, and medical devices, reverberate through all communities. However, widespread evidence exists that these impacts are not evenly distributed, but are disproportionately intense and persistent among vulnerable populations. Recovery from supply chain disruptions takes longer in these communities and it can be more difficult since they have fewer geographic and economic connections with outside and fewer resources to deal with these issues. It is crucial to look at the impacts on vulnerable and marginalized communities and make them resilient and sustainable. Disproportionate impacts of supply chain disruptions on vulnerable communities have broader economic justice and equity implications.

The purpose of this workshop was to understand the impacts of supply chain disruptions on vulnerable communities (i.e., groups that face greater risk and impact from supply chain disruptions due to pre-existing socioeconomic disadvantages, geographic isolation, inadequate infrastructure, and health challenges, including but not limited to low-income neighborhoods, remote rural communities, elderly populations, communities of color, people with disabilities, and coastal regions) and focus on the human and social impacts:

how communities are at risk of being impacted by supply chain disruptions
challenges faced in mitigation, preparedness, response, and recovery from disruption and innovative approaches to address the challenges to build and improve community resilience
sustainability strategies for overcoming supply chain challenges (i.e., policies, informal and formal mechanisms)
examples of adaptive, resilient, and sustainable efforts undertaken by communities to lessen these impacts and come up with actionable policies, programs, and strategies for the impacted communities.

The meeting of the Roundtable on Science and Technology for Sustainability was held on July 24-25, 2023. On July 24, the Roundtable, in collaboration with the Board on Energy and Environmental Systems and the Board on Science Education convened a one-day public workshop, Challenges and Opportunities towards a Just Transition and Sustainable Development. Participants discussed scientific-related priorities to a just transition and ways to translate research from the lab to the field and practice, as well as ways to inform policy making. This publication summarizes the presentations and discussion of the workshop.
On July 25, the Roundtable held a session on Sustainability across the National Academies, and senior staff from different divisions and programs within the National Academies discussed current activities and priorities relating to sustainability. Roundtable members also discussed suggestions for potential ideas for sustainability science and technology activities for Fall 2023.

The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine’s Roundtable on Science and Technology for Sustainability, in collaboration with the Board on Energy and Environmental Systems and the Board on Science Education convened a one-day public workshop, Challenges and Opportunities towards a Just Transition and Sustainable Development on Monday, July 24, 2023.
The workshop discussed just transitions and sustainability initiatives across the globe, including key measurement frameworks and the nexus between just transitions and the Sustainable Development Goals. Participants discussed the role of the private sector, including how small and medium-sized enterprises could benefit from just transitions, and positive case studies relating to opportunities for education and inclusive skills development for clean energy transitions.
The workshop was designed to provide scientific input to the discussions of a Private Sector Summit, to be held on the margins of the United Nations 2023 SDGs Summit in September. This publication summarizes the presentations and discussion of the workshop.

Virtual Side-Event at the 8th Multi-stakeholder Forum on Science, Technology and Innovation for the Sustainable Development Goals (STI Forum)
The U.S. National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine convened a virtual session, Operationalizing Sustainable Development: Localization of the Sustainable Development Goals on Tuesday, May 2, 2023 as part of the United Nations’ 8th Multi-stakeholder Forum on Science, Technology, and Innovation for the Sustainable Development Goals (STI Forum) Side Event.
In November 2022, the National Academies Committee on Operationalizing Sustainable Development released a short consensus report, Operationalizing Sustainable Development to Benefit People and the Planet that identifies key research priorities and possible actionable steps to operationalize sustainable development across eight interrelated themes. One key takeaway from the case studies presented in the report is that local communities have an important role to play in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
In addition to sharing the study findings, this virtual session highlighted a number of on-the-ground examples of localization, including the role of science, technology, and innovation and opportunities for engaging youth, civil society, and local governments in achieving the SDGs.

California's Transformative Climate Communities (TCC) present a unique opportunity for California neighborhoods to bring diverse stakeholders together to work collaboratively on a blueprint for capacity-building while identifying Greenhouse Gas mitigation projects that have multiple public, economic, and health co-benefits. This open session seeks to hear from various TCC stakeholders about the program's benefits and the potential for it to be expanded nationwide and implemented with federal funds appropriated by the Inflation Reduction Act.

As part of Climate Week NYC, Franklin Carrero-Martínez, Senior Director of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine’s Science and Technology for Sustainability (STS) Program, participated in a panel discussion on September 22, 2025*. The session focused on the recent publication, EnergyNet Explained: A How-To Guide for the 21st Century Energy System* with co-authors from Sweden and the United States. Panelists described recent developments and future large-scale implementation of the EnergyNet in Sweden and throughout the European Union, and discussed efforts to bring the EnergyNet to the United States, particularly on college and university campuses, and in states, cities, and communities.
